August Election Draws Interest

The deadline to file petitions in the August election has come and gone. The State and County General Elections, as well as the Pegram City election will be held on August 2nd, 2012. Races and candidates to be chosen from in south Cheatham include:

In Pegram the election will be for (1) Mayor and two (2) Alderman seats with all being elected to four (4) year terms. Former Mayor Charles Morehead and current Mayor Eugene Evans are running for Mayor. If Evans loses that bid, he will fill out the remainder of his original term as alderman, which runs through August of 2014. If Evans wins his bid for Mayor, someone will be appointed to fill his alderman term through 2014. The seats of Bob Sanders, (who was appointed to fill the term of Carol Crook which expires in August 2012), and Rick Roark will be on the ballot. 3 people  are running for those 2 seats: incumbent aldermen Bill Herbert and Bob Sanders, and George W. Hardin.

Another race that has attracted several potential candidates is the 6th District School Board race. Candidates are: current Board Member Tammie Lavender; former Board Member Larry Turner; Brian Chase and; Deborah Buma.

There are 2 candidates for County Roads Superintendent: Kerry McCarver of Pleasant View, and Carl Cothern of Ashland City.

The following seats will be in a primary for the August election, with the General Election being in November. US House of Representatives, 5th and 7th Congressional Dist.

Since current Representative Phillip Johnson’s announcement that he would not seek re-election for TN House of Representatives 78th District, that primary race has really heated up with 10 candidates: Gary Binkley (R),  6th District Commissioner John Haines (R), Donald Kemp (R), Mary Littleton (R), Kirk Low (R), Lynne Ray (R), 3rd District Commissioner John-Paul Wood, Jr. (R), Jane Crisp (D), Linda Hayes (D), Rick Wilson (I).

Betty Gail Balthrop is unopposed Assessor of Property.

Seats also up for filling during the November election including 3 commission seats on the Kingston Springs City Commission. To run, candidates may begin picking up petitions from May 18th, 2012.


The last day to register to vote in the August election is July 3rd, 2012, and Early Voting will run from July 13th – July 28th, 2012.
