Camp is a wonderful, fascinating place for any child, but for children with handicaps it is truly an awesome place.
The We A.R.E. Family Summer Camp provides children with physical and/or mental handicaps with an environment where, together with our all-volunteer staff , they work toward the goal of independence through higher education or technical training while having a fun week in the sun swimming, riding horses, boating, fishing, etc.
Last year we asked our campers to provide feedback regarding their experiences at camp and I would like to share 11-year-old Brooke’s comment. She wrote “Camp is AWESOME!!! I love going every year. It gives me a chance to hang out with girls like me and I don’t feel so different.”
It costs $650.00 to send one kid to camp for a week; none of this is paid by the families of the campers although they do help with fundraising efforts. This year we need to raise $17,500.00. There are no corporate sponsors, no national support groups. All of the monies for camp are raised by a dedicated group of unpaid volunteers with events like golf tournaments, poker runs, bake sales and garage sales.
This Saturday there will be a huge sale to benefit this year’s camp at 541 Juniper Drive in Pegram. We have enough “Stuff” for a humongous sale. There are lots of toys, bicycles, books, arts and crafts supplies, computer printers and computers. There is even a Dell system that has never been out of the box. There are some clothes, clothes for big men and suits for smaller men, baby stuff and kid’s stuff. Rain or shine starting at 6:30 on Saturday the 21st at Russ and Reba Edlin’s home; under the carport and the big tent.
