* HMS has many wonderful academic and extra-curricular programs to be proud of sharing with the community, but our Journalism Club would especially like to share with the Harpeth faithful a couple of real highlights in particular that took place this past week. Both our Physical Education department and our Harpeth Band program received two distinguished accomplishments recently that we certainly feel worthy of our praise and acknowledgement.
The Coordinated School Grant by: Cosette Bolt
The HMS P.E. Department recently was awarded the Coordinated School Grant due to the exceptional efforts and hard work of Coach Michael Wallace. Coach Wallace has taught P.E. and Health to our students for the past five years. In addition, over the last few seasons he has coached basketball with Coach Turpin, and in the past has also coached baseball while at Harpeth. This particular federal grant was awarded to our school for the purchase of one hundred pedometers and related materials for the up-coming school year of 2013-’14. HMS received the award because Coach Wallace wrote a grant explaining how his department would use these pedometers with our students in tracking generalized statistics concerning their activities during P.E. and other related health and physical training courses. When asked to comment on this awarded grant, Coach Wallace said, “Coach Turpin, Coach Allen, and I are very excited about the pedometer activities that will be included in the P.E. curriculum next year! We think that our students will greatly benefit from this pedometer program.” To continue with their recent success, the coaches have also applied for the NFL Play 60 Grant, which, if chosen, awards $10,000.00 for P.E. and new gym equipment to the winning school.
MTSOBA Festival by: Zach Chase
Congratulations to our HMS Seventh and Eighth Grade Band.
The MTSBOA Concert Festival was held on Friday, March 8th in White House, TN. Our 7th & 8th grade band students combined their musical talents to play two different pieces for a panel of judges. For their outstanding efforts they received “Superior” rankings for both pieces in “Sight Reading” and “Performance”. Mrs. Sarah Bailey, our band director, commented by saying, “The student’s performance was superb! We are very proud of our HMS combined band for their excellent representation of our school.”
HMS is very proud of both of these accomplishments and would like to once again congratulate Coach Wallace and Ms. Bailey (and the band, of course) for their dedicated efforts on our behalf. Every day our faculty and staff work diligently to provide the best possible educational environment and academic advancement for our student’s success. With that thought in mind, along with the excellent program examples like the two described above, it is easy to see why Harpeth Middle is not only becoming one of the best schools, but also one of the best known schools throughout Middle Tennessee.
