Samuel Arthur Butts, III passed away on February 4. Sam was a husband, brother, son, stepfather and Buddy to family and friends. He is preceded by his parents Samuel Arthur Butts, Jr. and Virginia Nelle Butts. He is survived by his wife, Glenna Butts; his brother, Jim Butts; his stepdaughter Sarah Ward (Josh); his grandchildren Olive and Wyeth; and other loving family and pets.
As a native Nashvillian, Sam graduated from MBA in 1967. He obtained his undergraduate and doctor of jurisprudence degrees from UNC. The consummate attorney for 38 years, Sam was an advocate for his clients in the fields of ERISA and Employee Benefits law. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, served as President and member of the executive committee for the Middle Tennessee Employee Benefits Counsel (‘81-‘87) and a member of the Mayor Bredesen’s Study and Formulating Committee and Chair, Retirement Plans for the City of Nashville.
