Harpeth Basketball District Runners Up Both Teams to Host 1st Round of Region Tourney

The District 9AA Tournament was held this past week at Volunteer State in Gallatin Tennessee and Cheatham County was represented well. Both Championship games included all Cheatham County Teams!

The Lady Indians started their tournament last Wednesday night playing a 1st round game against the Greenbrier Lady Bobcats. Harpeth came away with a 29 point victory!

Then it was on to the semi-finals on Saturday with the Westmorland Eagles. It was a hard fought game by both teams with regulation ending in a 42-42 tie. In overtime it came down to Haley Tolle hitting 2 free throws to win the game 49-47.

In the Ladies Championship the lineup included the #2 seed Harpeth Lady Indians up against the #1 seed Sycamore War Eagles. The Lady Indians just couldn’t get it going on offense and fell to Sycamore 56-35.

The Lady Indians will host a Region 1st Round Game tonight / Friday.

The Harpeth Mens run to the Championship was a good one. Last Wednesday the Indians won their 1st round game over White House by 21.

Then it was on to the semi-finals and a matchup with Sycamore. The Indians took it to them from the start, leading from the opening basket. The Indians had a lead of as much as 29 points in the 3rd period, and won the game by 21, 73-52.

Next it was on to the Championship game with Cheatham County. The game was televised, and it was a wild one with the Indians coming out of the gate strong. They took an early lead, up 13-5 after the 1st period, and extending their lead at half to 31-19 with 12 points by Will Clayton, (he finished with 19).

In the 2nd half the Cheatham County Cubs showed why they were undefeated, coming back to tie it up at 42-42 at the end of the 3rd period. It was nip and tuck the rest of the way with the Cubs pulling out the 6 point win 59-53. What a game for all of the fans, both in the stands (about 2000) and who knows how many watching it on TV!

Coach Mantlo said that his players played hard and that he was “proud of them”. He added that “Cheatham just made more plays down the stretch.” He also pointed out “We’re not Done Yet!” On Saturday Mantlo will be facing his old team and Coach for first time.

The Indians will host David Lipscomb Saturday evening in the 1st Round of Regions, while the Lady Indians will host Hume Fogg Friday Night.
