The 54th Annual Highland Rim District Adult Leader Appreciation Banquet was held Saturday night (March 29, 2014) at Pegram Church of Christ. Woody Hall, immediate past Scoutmaster of Troop 594 was awarded the Scoutmaster Award of Merit, which is the highest award that can be given to a Scoutmaster. There were 83 people in attendance at the Banquet representing scout units from all over the Highland Rim District. The Highland Rim District is made up of four counties Cheatham, Dickson, Hickman and Humphrey. There are 16 Boy Scout Troops, 30 Cub Scout Packs and an assortment of Venture Crews and Explorer Posts.
This was the first time in the 54 year history of the Banquet that it had been held outside of Dickson County. Cheatham County did an outstanding job hosting the event this year. In fact, according to one long time attendee, Mrs. Buford Reed of Dickson, “This was the most beautiful banquet I have ever attended. Our hosts sure did raise the bar for future banquets.” According to several attendees, the banquet was well organized and executed. The food was excellent. The event was catered by Penny Whitaker, a local business woman and a proud scout Mom.
Jerry V. Smith, of Dickson, was the after-dinner guest speaker. His topic was Men of Honor and how the Boy Scouts of America are still providing such men to serve our community, state and Nation. He referenced the founder of Scouting, Baden-Powell and other pioneers in the scouting movement.
Troop 594, sponsored by Pegram Church of Christ was very excited to have seven of their former Scoutmasters present at the Banquet. The Troop had the current Scoutmaster, Chris Fred and our 1959 founding Scoutmaster, Marvin W. Crouch. In addition, there were 5 additional Scoutmaster of Troop 594 present who still remain active in scouting in various roles in the Highland Rim District.
