Marcellus is a kindergarten student at Pegram Elementary School who was recently diagnosed with a rare brain tumor called Pontine Glioma. He has been undergoing radiation treatments at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital and just completed his 33rd and final treatment!
A big part of Marcellus’ week has been the time he gets to spend in his classroom in between treatments. Marcellus spends an hour or so each week with his classmates. Marcellus loves his teachers and the students at PES and they are just as delighted to see him each week when he comes to visit. It is always a special treat for his classmates and the staff!
While he has been away, Vanderbilt sent a “Monkey in My Chair” to hold his spot in the class. The students take the “monkey” with them wherever they go in the school to remember Marcellus throughout the day. More information can be found on monkeyinmychair.org, which states, “Through the program, each child is provided with a “monkey kit” which includes a big stuffed monkey that takes their place in school when they are unable to be there. The kits include the monkey with a backpack, a book to help teachers explain to students the situation their classmate is facing and how it affects them, a teacher companion guide, along with other items that can be utilized by the child and/or their classmates. All kits are sent out at no cost to the families or hospitals.”
Cheatham County community members have also gathered together to support and encourage Marcellus throughout this journey and want everyone to have an opportunity to be a part of the miracles going on! If you would like to make a donation to the family, there is an account set up at the Community Bank and Trust in Pegram. To show your support you can purchase Marcellus buttons and bracelets from Melody Henry on the family’s Facebook page “Miracles for Marcellus”. The facebook page will also keep you updated on Marcellus’s progress and events going on!
Make plans to attend the Benefit for Marcellus on March 19th at the Livery Stables of Pleasant View. There will be a chili cook-off, silent auction, bake sale, cake auction, live music, and other surprises for Marcellus that you won’t want to miss!
