Harpeth Teams Have Victorious Senior Night

The Harpeth High School basketball seniors and their parents were honored last Friday night for Senior Night.

Making the night even more special were the 2 W’s added to the season for the Indians and the Lady Indians against the Cheatham County Cubs.

The Lady Indians started the night off on the right note, defeating the Lady Cubs 47 – 36, sweet revenge after their disappointing 45 – 41 loss in early December. They went in at the half behind 22 – 19, but came out strong in both the 3rd and 4th quarters, outscoring the Lady Cubs 28 – 14 in the second half. Holli Flippo, the team’s only senior put up 15 points in the win, and then was mugged by her team when she and her parents were introduced. Karley Miller scored 13, Haley Felker 12, Maryann Fenner 4 and Emily Erland 3.

The boys game followed and the Indians picked up another important win in the cross county rivalry, winning 73 - 55. They started off slow, going in at the half ahead 22 – 21, but a third quarter 30 – 14 surge added some separation, 52 – 35. Another close quarter in the 4th but the Indians never let go of the lead they picked up in the third, ending the game with a 73 – 55 win.

Trey Caruthers had a big night, scoring 24 points, Kevin Giltner followed with 14, Tyler Caruthers with 12, Perry Horkins with 9, Cody Hudson 5, Steven Dixon 4, Lathan Turner 3, Kendrick Jones 2.

The games Tuesday night at Montgomery Central were cancelled mid-game because of the dangerous weather that was heading across the state.

The teams travel to Pleasant View to take on the Sycamore War Eagles on Friday night, February 8th, tip off at 6:30. The District Tournament begins February 14th.

Harpeth Wrestlers Gave State Champs A Run

The TSSAA Division I-A-AA Dual Team State Wrestling Tournament took place at Clarksville High School this past weekend. The Harpeth Wrestling Team qualified for the tournament by winning the A-AA Regional Dual and Sub-State titles on January 24 and 26, 2008. Harpeth drew Chattanooga's Notre Dame in the opening round of the tournament. Notre Dame entered the tournament as the favorite to win and was the two-time defending state champions. Harpeth would have to perform at their very best to come away with a victory over a team this good. The fighting Irish started the meet with a 7-2 victory over Harpeth's Travis McCoy at 140lbs. Notre Dame received three team points. Harpeth rallied back with three straight victories. Adam Bilbrey won 6-2 at 145lbs, Kenneth Cantrell won 3-0 at 152lbs, and Will Bradshaw got a 3:46 pinfall win at 160lbs. The team score at this point was Harpeth 12 and Notre Dame 3. The 171lbs match was the most intense match of the tournament. David Stapleton and Notre Dame's Ethan Nelson battled each other for three solid periods and ended regulation time with a 3-3 tie. Overtime would have to decide the winner of the match. In the first overtime, the wrestlers wrestled from the neutral position. The first person to score within the minute of overtime would be declared the winner. At the end of the first overtime, the score was still tied. Harpeth and Notre Dame would have to go into the second overtime. In the second overtime, each wrestler would have thirty seconds from the bottom position to wrestle. Who ever had the greatest number of points scored would be declared the winner. Both wrestlers battled again with the score still tied at the end of the second overtime. Now Stapleton and Nelson were chartering into unknown territory. It is very seldom that matches go into a third overtime to decide a winner. At this point in the match, both wrestlers were completely exhausted. The official flipped his red and green disk to give choice to the wrestlers. Notre Dame won the flip and chose the bottom position. This meant that Stapleton would have to hold Nelson on the mat for thirty seconds. The match began again and the two wrestlers continued their battle. The Notre Dame wrestler was able to get to his feet and score the escape point, winning the match 4-3 in the third overtime. Congratulations to David on a well fought match. The team score was now Harpeth 12 and Notre Dame 6. Harpeth would now begin to see hard times. The Indians would forfeit the 189lbs, 215lbs, and 285lbs weight classes. As a result, Notre Dame would receive eighteen addition points bringing the team score to Notre Dame 24 and Harpeth 12. The fighting Irish then went on a three match run with pinfall wins at 103lbs and at 112lbs and a 12-5 win at 119lbs. This brought the new team score to Notre Dame 39-12. Harpeth bounced back with a 10-4 win by Casey Lampley at 125lbs, a win at 130lbs by Justin Cox and a final win at 135lbs by Josh Pyrdum. The final team score was Notre Dame 39 and Harpeth 27.

Harpeth went on to defeat David Lipscomb 48-27 in the consolation quarter-finals. Winning for Harpeth was: Kenneth Cantrell, David Stapleton, Wesley Sovine, Nick Cantrell, Damean Sawyer, Casey Lampley, Justin Cox, and Josh Pyrdum. Harpeth ended the day against East Literature Magnet School in the consolation semi-finals. East Literature was another school that had a powerful line-up and had placed third in the state tournament in 2007. Their line-up this year was as tough. Harpeth opened up wide with wins from Kenneth Cantrell and David Stapleton. Harpeth then forfeited the 189lbs, 215lbs, and 285lbs weight classes which gave East Literature eighteen points. Harpeth also forfeited the 160lbs weight class due to an injury to Will Bradshaw in an earlier match. The Harpeth trainer was concerned about further participation from Will. East Literature would receive another six points added to their total score. Harpeth rallied back with a big pinfall win by Wesley Sovine at 103lbs. East Literature replied with victories at 112lbs and 119lbs. Harpeth wrestlers, Casey Lampley and Justin Cox both countered with pinfall victories which had an upset victory in sight for the Harpeth Indians. East Literature would challenge with tough matches at 135lbs and 140lbs. East Literature scored wins against Josh Pyrdum and Travis McCoy. Adam Bilbrey rounded out the Harpeth wins at 145lbs with the team score ended at East Literature 40 and Harpeth 33. "They wrestled like champions throughout the tournament. I am proud of each of their efforts." Harpeth coach, Ricky Woods said about his team. "We went in as heavy underdogs and had the toughest teams in the state worried. I would like our chances against any of those teams if we had a full line-up." Woods said. When you subtract forfeits, Harpeth's score against Notre Dame was Notre Dame 21 and Harpeth 15. The score against East Literature minus forfeit points was Harpeth 27 and East Literature 17. Great job the the Harpeth wrestling team on an outstanding state tournament.

They all stepped up their game, coach Lance said. The Cardinals face a tough opponent this weekend against Pleasant View, but Coach Lance and Coach Robbie believe the Cardinals can compete if they all work hard this week at practice, hustle, and play the "fundamental basketball "they are capable of playing.
Tip off is at 1:50 p.m.

The 6th grade girls played West Cheatham in the year end tournament this weekend. It was one of those games that we had good shots but nothing would fall. I have sent a pic of Kendell Haines she was the high scorer this week with 7 points. Kendell has improved so much this last 2 years and worked very hard. She's not the tallest girl on the team but she has learned ways around that. Tiffany Beech had 6 points Annie Kate Hudson had 5 Elizibeth Dixon had 2 and Bailey Rawlins had 1. Michelle Abelis worked hard on Defense and handled the ball well. Kara McNally, Macy Pate, played well making good passes and lots of hustle. My 2 5th graders Dasha Brandon and Mallory Anderson also played well! Cardinals 21 W. Cheatham 25.
