Pegram Council Accepts Grant

The Pegram Town Council met in regular session last Thursday, all members were present.

Mayor Charles Morehead announced at the beginning of the meeting that he had met with Senator Rosalind Kurita recently, where she presented him with a check for a $5150 Community Enhancement Grant to be spent to refurbish the town’s tennis courts. A motion was made by Aubrey Chambers, seconded by Chip Chipoletti to approve a proposal by Tennis Court Construction Company of Nashville to do the job for the grant amount. That motion was unanimously approved.

Another project that has been discussed at many Pegram meetings is a Public Works Building for equipment storage. “I still think we need to make some kind of decision on whether to move forward with the building”, Mayor Charles Morehead told the aldermen. “We’re now getting through the winter, and we’ve got equipment outside”, he added. The council spent time again discussing bids on different types of buildings, a steel frame building for nearly $40,000, or wood structure with metal roof for $26,000+, and other options in between. Alderman Gene Evans knew of some options but needed specs from Engineer Brad Bivens who was not in attendance. Morehead hopes those numbers will be available in time to get some information on the table at the next staff meeting.

In new business, a motion was made by Aubrey Chambers and seconded by Gene Evans to approve Ordinance 2008 – 56, creating a new zoning district called AR – 1, Agricultural Transitional as recommended by the Planning Commission. The purpose is to “provide for a transition from rural to urban uses”, is generally located on the fringe of the urban area, permits both farm and non-farm dwellings, as well as other open space and recreational activities. Principal uses, conditional uses and accessory uses are all defined in the ordinance. After discussion and many questions, the motion was withdrawn and the ordinance was recommended back to the Planning Commission for further discussion.

Ordinance 2008-57 was approved on first reading and a public hearing was set for the February 28th meeting. The ordinance concerns and regulates Customary Incidental Home Occupations, which is a gainful occupation or profession conducted by “members of a family residing on the premises or only one person in addition to those persons residing therein”. If you have, or are planning to have a home based business in Pegram you should go by city hall and look over the ordinance, which will be up for second and final reading at the February 28th meeting.

Also approved was a motion by Terri Ray and seconded by Aubrey Chambers to amend the Sewer Ordinance, dedicating the sewer line extension back to the town.

Customer Appreciation Valentine Giveaway Day

George Brown, Pegram’s long time Postmaster has a lot to be thankful for these days. “I’m blessed” he said, after a frightening medical episode recently hospitalized him, and could have ended much worse than it did.

George has always been thankful for his many loyal customers, but after the many prayers and well wishes, along with the enormous card signed by many wishing him well, he may be even more thankful for his customers than ever before.

So George wants to say thanks to you all and show his appreciation like he has been doing for the last 5 or 6 years around Valentine’s Day. He has some really cute stuffed Valentine animals, some that sing and dance and light up. Loyal customers are invited to come in, fill out the form, and enter yourself in the drawing which will be held about 2 days before Valentine’s Day.

It’s a special Valentine’s Day for George, and he wants to share it with the people who mean so much to him.
